“The name of the band speaks volumes about their music. The emotional depth of their compositions can only be compared to the size of an ocean. Oceansize is currently one of the most innovative bands and they appeal to the ever growing need of music lovers to look beyond formatted three minute pop songs.Described as ‘progressive death indie’ Oceansize were founded in Manchester in 1998 and from the beginning their compositions were uncompromising and daring. It’s been some time since I have had my “daily” music lesson, but with work and everything, it’s not been quite that simple. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up more frequently with this… but regardless of all of that, my selection for today is from the very amazing Isis. Their new album Wavering Radiant is the first album by them since Oceanic that has caught my ear and taken me for a ride. It has truly set itself apart from the rest of their catalog. The song which I feel is best pleace as a representative of the greatness of the new music is the one which i have chosen: “20 Minutes / 40 Years”. Whenever I listen to this particular track I not only hear good old classic Isis, but I also hear hints of Thrice’s The Alchemy Index - Vol 2: Water and Tool’s Lateralus. But hey… that’s just me.

Enjoy!

For the audio selection of the day, I have chosen a track from one of my favorite albums of 2007: IdiotPilot’s “Wolves”. While an INCREDIBLY under-rated band, they still have made an impact on some of today’s bigger acts; including my personal musical heroes, Deftones, in which they did a cover of the band’s electronic ballad “Teenager” with Deftones singer Chino Moreno. The song I have chosen is the opening track from Wolves, “Last Chance”. Pretty impressive for a band with only TWO band members, both of whom were 15 years old at the time!

The song (as well as the entire album) has a feeling which brings me back to my days of writing for the Messenger Post in Canandaigua, as I drove every morning back and forth to submit articles to fulfill the duties of my Communications degree’s final requirement: the internship.

While music may not have the same impact on all, I feel it would be a complete lie for anyone reading this to say that they have never had a song have that effect on them… where you sort of transport back in time to a place you were when you first heard something, or where you most often heard it. It’s a good feeling. Hope you enjoy!

In a surprising (well, not really) twist, today will feature both a music video and an audio file to enjoy! The song which I have first chosen is from one of the truly great bands of my day, and one of which was WAY ahead of their time in song structure AND helped (in my opinion) bring melody to the hardcore genre. I provide to you… Earthtone 9’s “Tat Twam Asi”… a selection from one of my favorite albums of all time, Arc’Tan’Gent. ENJOY!

The audio file for the band of the day is in my next post.
